The ED Manager is Responsible for daily and overall operation of the Emergency Department, including staff performance, patient care processes and outcomes, patient/family satisfaction, and prudent resource management.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Continually assesses process and effectiveness of overall patient care on the unit
- Selects and supervises unit staff
- Monitors and evaluates staff performance/competency on an ongoing basis and in collaboration with the employee
- Recognizes employee’s strengths
- Identifies employee’s work-related needs and goals
- Develops performance improvement plans, as needed
- When necessary, is able to initiate and follow through with disciplinary processes
- In collaboration with unit staff and Clinical & Professional Development staff, identifies and develops plans to address staff learning/competency improvement needs
- Acts as a clinical resource for staff
- Develops unit-specific policies, procedures, and clinical competencies using evidence-based standards of care
- Prepares and monitors unit budget(s)/productivity. Identifies cost-effective systems needed to support the business of the department, taking into account business trends, resource availability, and changes in patient mix
- Interacts with patients, seeks staff input, and analyzes unit patient satisfaction data to identify areas for improvement
- Ensures unit performance conforms with hospital-wide quality and patient safety goals
- Develops, monitors, and evaluates unit-specific quality improvement indicators, in collaboration with Quality Division
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with unit co-workers, physicians, vendors, other departments and members of the healthcare team
- Facilitates participation of unit staff in evaluation of new products and equipment, as appropriate/requested
- Collaborates with Director and other managers to assess overall staffing patterns, need for RN contract services
- Investigates and addresses unit-specific physician complaints, seeks assistance from Director and/or Chief Nursing Officer when indicated
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing or related field or currently working to obtain
- Must have the ability to obtain a Registered Nurse License in the state of Oregon
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Organization approved workplace violence training or obtain within 6 months of hire
- American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Emergency Nurses’ Association Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course card or obtain within 1 year of hire
- CCRN or CEN certification preferred
- Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) card preferred
- Master’s degree in Nursing or related field preferred
- Specialty certification in area of responsibility preferred
- Five years experience in acute care hospital in past 10 years
- Two years managerial or leadership experience in past 5 years
